Democracia
From Berlininaugust
Who we are?
Democracia is a collaborative tool dedicated to promoting an unprecedented interaction between Brazilian population and its government representatives. The project was launched on the web around 2000, when three social activists decided to create something like a virtual cyberdemocratic community, guided by the principle that democracy is not possible without information. The site worked at that time similarly to a virtual congress, where people could track government decisions and politicians, see their profiles, chat with them and foster debates. Now, 7 years, 300.000 users, 1.000 governors, senators, presidents and politicians profiles later, the core concept has increased into a web 2.0 initiative, available on the Democracia beta version [1].
How we share democracy online?
There cannot be democracy without information. That is why we want to encourage ciberativism through debates, online petitions, blogs and a virtual community focused on civic engagement and political participation. Our commitment is not only with democracy itself, but with rethinking and bridging the digital divide in Brazil and across the globe. Make people think better, to act better. Today, close to 50 million* Brazilians surf the web, most of all dispersed through Orkut, Myspace, Facebook and all kinds of virtual communities. This is a resonant number in comparison to the 9,8 million measured in 2000**, and a clear reflexion of the particularly gregarious nature of our people. But it is also still a small piece of the cake we can have and share among ourserlves in the field of poverty eradication and digital solidarity. So why not spread this real online democracy tool worldwide?
Democracy is our keynote - Be part of it!
